School Attendance Policy

Students must attend school regularly so they can achieve their educational best and increase their career and life options.

In NSW, all children from the age of 6 are legally required to attend school or be registered for home schooling through the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA). All students must complete Year 10, or its equivalent.

Young people below the age of 17 who have completed Year 10 must be:

  • in school, or registered for home schooling
  • in approved education or training, such as a traineeship, apprenticeship or TAFE
  • in full-time paid employment (average 25 hours a week)
  • in a combination of work, education and/or training (average of 25 hours a week combined).

Students 17 years and over who are enrolled in school must attend school regularly to meet HSC course requirements.

As a parent or carer, you are responsible for ensuring your child attends school every day when they are of compulsory school age. You must explain all absences to the school within 7 days.

Attendances are recorded electronically by teachers every lesson at Cromer Campus. This allows us to have very accurate data about when students are in class and whether they have been in a lesson. If a student is not in class, it is their own responsibility to catch up on the work missed.

Parents will be informed by SMS if a student is not at school. This message can be replied to with an explanation for the absence.

Student attendance can also be monitored by parents through the Student Portal.

Uniform

Students attending Cromer Campus MUST wear the full school uniform every day (including black leather lace-up shoes).

There are no summer/winter uniform changeover dates. At Cromer Campus we encourage students to dress accordingly to the current conditions. This common sense approach ensures students are in uniform and comfortable all year round.

All articles of clothing, personal possessions and shoes should be clearly labelled with the student's name.

Use of Mobile Communication Devices

NBSC Cromer Campus supports the restrictions of mobile phones in accordance with the NSW Department of Education: Students’ Use of Mobile Phones in Schools, phone use in schools can impact student learning and wellbeing.

Restricting mobile phone use at school aims to increase focus in classrooms, remove distractions and promote positive social interaction, while reducing the potential for online bullying.

NBSC Cromer Campus has strong teaching and learning practices to support students in the classroom using various forms of appropriate technology, which maximises the benefits and minimises the risks of digital environments and prepares students for life beyond school. We foster a safe learning environment which supports and enhances each child’s social and emotional health through our wellbeing and learning support teams. The procedure outlined in this policy guides student use of mobile communication devices and online services at school.

Our school recognises the harm that maybe caused by mobile phones. We encourage and educate our students to use mobile communication devices in a safe, responsible and respectful way beyond school.

Plans

These plans help us to meet the needs of our community, improve the quality of teaching and enhance outcomes for all of our students.

Anti Bullying Plan

Bullying behaviour has three key features. It involves the intentional misuse of power in a relationship. It is ongoing and repeated, and it involves behaviours that can cause harm.

Our school rejects all forms of bullying behaviours, including online (or cyber) bullying by maintaining a commitment to providing a safe, inclusive and respectful learning community that promotes student wellbeing.

All staff are committed to establishing evidence-based approaches and strategies that promote a positive climate where bullying is less likely to occur.

All members of the school community are active participants in building a welcoming school culture that values diversity and fosters positive relationships.

A key component of a supportive school culture is building respectful relationships and an ethos that bullying is not accepted, in both online and offline environments. School staff will actively respond to student bullying behaviour.

Anti Bullying Plan

The NSW Department of Education requires all NSW public schools to have an Anti-bullying Plan which details the strategies implemented to reduce student bullying behaviours.

School Behaviour and Support Management Plan

The principles of positive behaviour for learning, inclusive practice, and cognitive well-being guide our daily operations. High expectations for behaviour and learning are maintained through effective role modelling, explicit teaching, and structured, strategic responses.

We are committed to working collaboratively with families at every stage to promote strong educational outcomes, well-being, and personal growth. Our school aims to establish equitable learning environments and implement school wide expectations across all school settings that support students’ social, emotional, and academic development.

At Cromer Campus we embed student wellbeing and positive behaviour approaches and strategies and respond to behaviours of concern, including bullying and cyberbullying behaviour.

Our School Behaviour and Support Management Plan (BSMP) identifies how our school prevents and responds to behaviours of concern as well as acknowledgement of positive behaviour.

The BSMP outlines the school's strategies using a multi-tiered approach across prevention, early intervention, targeted intervention, and intensive individual interventions.

School Improvement Plan

Our school plan sets clear goals for learning, wellbeing and excellence. It guides the work we do to support our students' learning and growth. It’s flexible, updated regularly, and helps us stay focused on what matters most – giving every student the best chance to succeed. We shape our school plan together with our school community. This makes sure it reflects our shared priorities and values.

Annual Report

Each year, we reflect on the progress we’ve made and share it through our annual school report.

The report highlights our achievements, challenges and growth. It gives families and our community a clear picture of how we’re tracking.

Our annual school report is part of our commitment to being open, accountable and always improving.
