PDHPE
Personal development, health and physical education (PDHPE) is mandatory from Kindergarten to Year 10.
According to the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA), students are expected to participate in PDHPE for 300 hours per year in Years 7 to 10.
PDHPE provides students with opportunities to explore issues that are likely to impact on the health, safety and wellbeing of themselves and others – now and in the future. Students also participate in challenging and enjoyable physical activity, improving their capacity to move with skill and confidence.
In Year 11 and 12, courses available include:
- Exploring Early Childhood (cross campus)
- Health and Movement Science
- Sport, Lifestyle and Recreation Studies. (cross campus)
The aim of the NESA PDHPE Years 7 to 10 syllabus is to develop students' capacity to enhance personal health and wellbeing, enjoy an active lifestyle, maximise movement potential and advocate lifelong health and physical activity.
For the Mandatory PDHPE course for Years 7-10 areas of study include:
- health, wellbeing and relationships
- movement skill and performance
- healthy, safe and active lifestyles.
This syllabus encourages young people to take a positive approach to managing their lives and equips them with skills for current and future challenges.
In Year 9 and 10, students can study Physical Activity and Sports Studies (PASS). PASS has a strong focus on learning through movement.
Areas of study include:
- foundations of physical activity
- enhancing participation and performance
- physical activity and sport in society
This syllabus promotes the concept of learning through movement. Students participate in The Premiers Sporting Challenge to develop sport coaching and administration skills. Students are given leadership opportunities by becoming involved in the organisation of school sporting carnivals and gala days.
The Year 11 course consists of two compulsory focus areas, a collaborative investigation and 2 depth studies.

The Year 12 course consists of two compulsory focus areas and 2 depth studies.
Focus Areas of study include:
- Health in an Australian and global context
- Training for improved performance
The syllabus provides a direct link with study and career opportunities in the areas of physiotherapy, paramedical, movement and health sciences.
